the only place for fireworks tonight. annapolis will have its own annual fireworks show. don harrison reports tonight's show almost didn't happen. >> reporter: a fireworks show almost didn't happen this year. like most cities, annapolis is on a tight budget but local businesses stepped up and rescued them. >> that's what being part of the city is all b everybody joins together, picks up the burden and helps out. >> reporter: fireworks are tradition for 4th of july and new year's eve. it will continue because business owners like this one. >> people look at annapolis as a historic traditional american feel. they want it come downtown and have a good time. part of my job, i believe, as a business or merchant downtown is to help be a part of that. >> i think it's awesome. it's great that the community is pitching in. >> reporter: people who have been coming could not imagine annapolis 2013 without fireworks. >> this wouldn't be as image jal. >> reporter: annapolis will be having two fireworks displace tonight. one at 7:30 north young are crowd and, of course, the second one at midnight.

maybe another. i think that either brad paul or i or don faulk would know if they were discussing this with senior housing developers. they met with tndc project managers, doing a preliminary analysis that went to the mayor's office of housing. they said they were very interested in it. now can this site be available? you had turned down the conditional use. so we decided with don that the logical thing would be to get in touch with the methodist church and find out. the result was that this lawyer told the methodist that they shouldn't get involved with it and each and every methodist i talk to, they are all interested in senior housing, but the lawyer said no. so what was the result? tndc was subpoenaeded and threatened with litigation and they had a lot of expense. i think you have heard about that. so they want to come forward and do the full analysis, which might be thousands of hours and the offer that they were told would be welcomed after the judge ordered them to talk. all right? now the methodist administrator said we would love to do that and the attorney says my client

ecstatic. cnn newsroom continues right now with don lemon. hey, don. . >> thank you very much. brooke is off today. a winter storm hammering the northeast with snow, sleet, and high winds after it barbed the south and spawned tornados and more misery. one of the tornados caught on camera. a walgreens in mobile, alabama, a tornado just churned through and josh holman was there when it happened. listen. >> i never have been in a war zone, but i'm sure this is what it looks like. all the stuff that is lifted off the buildings here. there were totes and things left in the trees. i was thankful i was alive. >> taken to carthy airport, a southwest airlines plane with 134 passengers skidded off the runway and luckily no one was hurt. as the snow piles up, thousands of travelers are stranded as flights are canceled and the kids out in the snow seem to be enjoying all of this. we will look at how people are coping and what else is in store. chad? >> wind for the big cities, don. it is going to be just one of the days where the planes can't get out of the way of each other. we will have airport de

mcconnell's spokesperson up there, don stewart who is regaling reporters with some kind of details about behind the scenes. stu is telling the reporters from the republican point of view. ed, what about from the white house point of view you about how this deal came to be and what it looks like? >> as mike laid out he s exactly right that vice president biden, of course, played a pivotal role. known as the mcconnell whisperer as somebody who when you go back to the debt ceiling debate about a year and a half ago he unsticked that when it was stopped up. he was brought in sort of as the closer again yesterday to try to move this along. it is not a completely done deal yet. as you noted this sequester came about all because the cuts were supposed to be so onerous that lawmakers in both parties would never let them go through and yet they he went right up to the edge here. this is important this s just as mike said a two month buydown. shut out the cuts for two months. come up with with other cuts. i'm told that half of the cuts will be defense. half will be nondefense some of the dom

shore men. don harrison explain what the labor dispute means for us. >> reporter: the port is one the main economic generators in the state of maryland. we have it over 14,000 jobs at this port. 1500 of those are ila labor jobs. those union long shore men could walk off the job sunday morn figure a new contract isn't settled. unions say it'll shut down the two largest terminals at the port where cars, farm equipment and cargo containers delivered. the port administration hopes a work stop age can be avoided. >> we are again hopeful that there will be an agreement before the deadline. we are going forward with our plans to accommodate if that agreement isn't met. >> reporter: the port administration is working on a back up plan. part of it would open two terminals only open during the week to business on the weekends. >> we want to make sure we can get as much cargo moving as possible leading up to the work stop age. . >> reporter: as issue are the usual wages and health care but one major sticking point is container rayalties. they were put in place in the 60s. both sides are supp

secretary shawn don van and his staff and the regional staff for recognizing what is going on here. i want to thank hope sf and all of the partners that we created. you know i was here when the planning grant was given to alice griffin and it wasn't just the celebration of the grant. we went to work. we went to work with the residents, the neighbors. we went to work with our supervisor and i know ms. cohen is out of breath and knows how important this is for her constituents and this district, but most importantly we knew if we didn't just talk the talk, that if we actually took the residents with us, and took all of the talent that we had in the city from the housing authority to our mayor's office of housing, to the redevelopment people, to the private developers, to the staff that has been so diligent, to the private nonprofit sector. the in incredible community based organizations and the bay view y and all these wonderful people that have been struggling for years saying "can we get some help? can we get some love in the town? can we do something that will get us all together?
